Sting: Inspired and Disciplined Double Libra

Sting was born with the Sun and Moon in Libra, a romantic sign with a gift for harmony. But it's the proximity of both with dedicated Saturn and intuitive Neptune that has allowed him to turn creative dreams into reality.

Born on October 2, 1951 at 1:30 a.m. in Wallsend, England as Gordon Matthew Sumner, the man nicknamed Sting has gone on to become one of the world's best known musicians. His style, grace and intelligence came through his singing, writing and playing for ten years in the rock group 'The Police' and has continued thrilling audiences since 1984, when he became a solo artist. Few pop performers have blended brains, romanticism and a beat like this talented artist. It should come as no surprise, then, that Sting's chart is strongly influenced by the sign Libra. Both his Sun and Moon are in this Venus-ruled sign that's closely associated with beauty and style. While some Librans come across as wishy-washy and overly anxious to please, Sting's strong sense of self and decades-long partnership have survived the distractions of stardom without a hint of scandal. The astrological explanation is a close conjunction between Saturn, the planet of order and discipline, with his Libra Sun. This powerful connection works wonders for someone with a purpose, and Sting wanted to be a musician since he was a small child. Saturn provides backbone, clarity and commitment, which has kept this air sign from drifting from his core values. But Saturn can be harsh, too, demanding and limiting in ways that can make some people appear cold and distant, which is definitely not the case with Sting. The reason is that he has Neptune -- the planet of compassion and imagination -- conjunct his Moon, the astrological symbol of emotions. This combination reflects his creative side, the poet, artist and dreamer who acts as a vehicle for expressing our collective feelings. Sting once said, "I'm so glad I have this way of expressing, in a veiled and artistic way, my most intimate feelings. A lot of people have the same feelings, but in others it must get bottled up. I'm proud of my being able to make it into artifacts that some people find beautiful or engaging."

Sting was, according to one of his songs, "Born in the Fifties," when serious Saturn and dreamy Neptune were close to one another in the early part of the decade. With astrology's two dominant bodies -- the Sun and the Moon -- closely joined with each of these planets, he reflects the potential for combining inspiration (Neptune) and discipline (Saturn) to create a world of dreams that we all can share. He might have kept this magic for himself if it wasn't for an opposition to his Sun and Saturn from Jupiter when he was born, though. This gigantic planet of expansion has taken the inner, private world of the artist and generously shared it with the world so we can all be touched by his music. Sting is very hard on himself, but it's that demanding quality which has enabled him to capture human emotion in sound and sing it back to us with such honesty and skill.
