Bill Gates is not only the world's richest man, but also one of the biggest philanthropists of all time. A Scorpio, born October 28, 1955 at 10:00 p.m. in Seattle, his fortune was built on an operating system (DOS) that was purchased by Microsoft for $50,000. Scorpio is a sign that's skillful at assessing value and applying resources (one's own or others') where they'll do the most good. And while Gates is recognized as one of the greats of the computing industry, his company is better known for adapting ideas generated by other companies than coming up with its own. Gates and Microsoft through Windows, Office and Internet Explorer -- among other products -- set standards on which the vast majority of the world's personal computers run. A true industrialist, his brilliant mind has primarily been more successful at producing profitable products than inventing new ones. This practical side of Bill Gates is reflected by the conjunction of Venus (money, values, worth) and Saturn (hard, cold reality) in his birth chart. The traditionally limiting role of Saturn has not blocked his earning power, as is often the case with a Venus-Saturn conjunction, but channeled it into a worldwide enterprise. Gates' hyper-abundance can be seen more clearly in his Second House of income and resources where expansive Jupiter is joined with Scorpio's ruling planet Pluto. While Pluto is best known as the mythological Lord of the Underworld -- a repository for the darker impulses of human character -- it is also the God of Wealth. Aligned with generous Jupiter in the money sector of his chart, it makes an apt symbol for his enormous wealth.
Bill Gates is known as a tough man who is not easily pleased. Scorpio sarcasm combined with a hair-trigger Moon in Aries tend to make for a hard-edged personality. The Venus-Saturn conjunction also indicates that no matter what he accomplishes, Gates is unlikely to become smug or self-satisfied. He's a tough boss, but is probably no less demanding on himself than he is on others. Saturn-Venus also knows the value of a dollar and will tend to spend money carefully. Gates' $130 million house is no mere personal extravagance, but an extension of his business designed to be used as a place for meeting with high-level dignitaries. We don't hear about him having an enormous yacht or private island, although he can easily afford whatever he wants. Instead, Bill and his wife Melinda are better known for their charitable work than their personal consumption. This may be good promotion for Microsoft, but it is a legitimate expression of Gates' values. He was born with Cancer, a nurturing and protective sign, rising in his chart. This often indicates an individual who is aware of his responsibility to those in need. And while Gates and his company have certainly been capable of behaving like bullies in the corporate world, the world's richest man's extensive philanthropic work shows how much he cares about earth's poorest citizens.
