Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal are a gossip columnist's dream. Two of the biggest young stars in Hollywood hooking up make a great story, especially following Reese's divorce from her hunky husband Ryan Phillippe. But there's something about this couple that doesn't seem quite right. Oscar-winner Reese is a stylish Southerner and mother of two. Jake's only four years younger than Reese, but his L.A. upbringing and artistic ways seem an odd match for her. A look at their astrological charts confirms these suspicions, even though there are clearly some positive connections between them.
Reese, born March 22, 1976, is an Aries -- a Fire sign that generally aligns favorably with Jake's Sun in fiery Sagittarius. But the shaggy-haired actor, born December 19, 1980, has the Sun so late in this sign that it's almost 90-degrees from Reese's Sun. This angle, called a square, is considered the toughest in the astrological toolkit. It often signals friction, but at this point all the sparks between them appear to be of the more delightful kind.
The critical factor in assessing Reese and Jake's chances of long-term coupledom is Reese's Moon. While Sun signs are very important, the Moon is much more personal and intimate, and is a key ingredient for lasting relationships. We don't have a birth time for Reese, and the Moon changed signs just before 9 a.m. on the day she was born. If she arrived before then, her Moon is in Sagittarius, perfectly aligned with Jake's Sun and opposite his Moon sign Gemini. A later birth, though, gives Reese a Capricorn Moon, which is much less compatible with Jake's chart. Her maturity, discipline and self-control -- as well as the odds -- favor the Moon in Capricorn, but they don't favor Jake. He's certainly serious as an actor, but much of his chart puts more of a premium on freedom than commitment.
Jake's Venus, the love planet, is in ever-adventurous Sagittarius and conjunct independent Uranus. Combine this spontaneous pair with his Moon in mobile Gemini, and he's less than ideal for a long-term relationship. Reese's Venus is in sensitive Pisces, hooked up in a harmonious 120-degree trine with active Mars in Cancer. This sign can be warm, caring and romantic, but needs loyalty in return. Still, she wasn't entirely out of character playing the ambitious Elle Woods in two successful films. That's because Reese's assertive Mars is in a tense square to her Aries Sun, making her a real go-getter. Perhaps a less demanding partner like Jake allows her the room to operate. Being with him is not a role to play for a lifetime, but one that fills the bill perfectly for now.
